Laura Wallace

Laura grew up in her dad’s furniture making shop and was familiar with tools and the working of wood from a young age. After a brief detour earning a biology degree, Laura trained under Kim Tipper in all areas of violin family instrument repair, restoration and bow repair. While working at Tipper Violins, she and her colleague Galen Hartley built their first violins together. Laura has furthered her training under Brian Hoover, and has gone on to develop her skills as a violin maker for over 15 years, creating instruments with playability and beauty as primary objectives. She finds particular joy in working with the musician to decide on a size and model that will fit with their specific goals for sound and comfort.

Laura works in her shop on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia, where she supports the local violin community with repair work and rehairs. She is the in-house luthier for PRISMA (prismafestival.com). She divides her time between new making and repairing the old violins that make their way to her shop. She is a member of the VSA and Women in Lutherie.
